The Teachers Are Blowing Their Whistles!

What are your real concerns?

10 March 2010

More than 11,000 pages of the website have now been read.

I will wait till the stats settle down after the Today Tonight program before coming to any conclusions about the current concerns of Queensland teachers.

After the Today Tonight program "Teachers Marching Out" on Friday 26 February, a page was set up on Facebook - "People who like teaching are liars".

Students seem to have set this Facebook page up.

Which explains why so few Queensland school leavers want to become teachers - they know what is going on in their classrooms.

Before the rush of community interest in the website, The Contract Work was the page that was getting the most hits.

One in twenty of the people who read the website consider emailing me - they click on the link to send me an email - but then they change their mind.

Why not join the blog?

Teachers - use an assumed name, of course.

Then you can join the discussion.

And I can let you know about media requests, etc.

31 January 2010

8000 pages of The Teachers Are Blowing Their Whistles have now been read.

There has been quite a significant change in the way that the website is being used.

The following stats are based on the last 1000 pages -

The pay was read 133 times.

Teachers' stories was read 108 times.

The home page was read 106 times.

The contract work was read 97 times.

The bullying was read 68 times.

The remote areas was read 64 times.

The behaviour problems was read 55 times.

The asbestos was read 50 times.

The false allegations was read 48 times.

Your real concerns was read 45 times.

Then there is quite a fall in interest to -

The abuse - which was read 26 times.

The promotion system - which was read 26 times.

82.3 per cent of pages were read in Australia.

7.1 per cent were read in the United Kingdom.

3.3 per cent were read in the United States.

2.4 per cent were read in India.

Which all suggests to me that the main readers of the website are young teachers who are looking for work.

And that their main concerns are the pay, the contract work, the remote areas, the behaviour problems and the false allegations, in that order.

I would suspect that the figures for bullying and asbestos may be artifically high because of parents who are searching for information.

And that problems such as the abuse and the dysfunctional promotion system may not become obvious to these teachers until they actually start work.

And that when they do start work, they are kept so busy that they do not have time to look at this sort of a website.

Although there are a few hits that come from Queensland government computers.

Teachers who use these Queensland government computers should be aware that their website searches are recorded through the Education Queensland Head Office library computer.

15 November 2009

5000 pages of The Teachers Are Blowing their Whistles have now been read.

If you have found this website you are probably -

 * a Queensland teacher

 * a student teacher

 * a qualified teacher who is waiting to get a Queensland teaching position

 * a retired Queensland teacher

 * a Queensland teacher who has resigned

 * a Queensland teacher who is working overseas

 * an interstate or overseas teacher who is considering moving to work in Queensland

 * a Queensland public servant working with teachers

 * a Queensland politician or political staffer with an interest in education

 * a whistleblower with an interest in education

How can I be reasonably sure of this?

Because of the wording of the "google searches" that you used to find the website.

The following stats are based on the 1000 pages read between 12 October and 15 November, 2009 -

21 people spent more than one hour looking at the website.

75.8 % of the pages were read in Australia

8.6 % of the pages were read in the UK

6.2% of the pages were read in the US

The Home Page was read 141 times.

Teachers' stories was read 121 times.

These two pages are the only two pages that are linked to other websites - to the best of my knowledge - so they act as a filter to "weed out" people with no real interest in the working conditions of Queensland teachers.

The Behaviour problems was read 119 times.

The contract work was read 99 times.

The remote areas was read 87 times.

The bullying was read 80 times.

The pay was read 76 times.

Teachers' pay has been very much in the news during the past month, as the Queensland Teachers' Union advised teachers to accept the latest Queensland Government pay offer.

But, if you accept that people would want to read about the issues that are of most concern to them, then these results suggest that student behaviour problems, contract work, being sent out to work in remote areas and workplace bullying were of greater concern to Queensland teachers than their pay.

The asbestos was read 60 times.

The false allegations was read 45 times.

The investigations was read 40 times.

The promotion system was read 37 times.

The marking was read 31 times.

The threats was read 25 times.

The curriculum was read 19 times.

Obviously I have made a few assumptions here, but these results are interesting.

I would welcome comments on the conclusions that I have drawn from these stats.
